We are technology-optimists inspired by digital innovation and entrepreneurship that disrupts, pushes boundaries and democratises opportunities of technology for digital economies and society.

Emerging technologies play a crucial part in a new global wave of productivity and growth. Ubiquitous gigabit connectivity and 5G, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence are soon reaching a tipping point. There will be further proliferation of Cloud and Internet of Things applications. Of all emerging technologies, AI and Big Data are generally regarded as having the most profound and irreversible impact on our life, societies and economies.

Mindful of the impact of technology, industry, governments and civil society need to partner and ensure that the next phase of technology-driven globalisation is human-centred, inclusive and sustainable. Trust and technology acceptance are key in this endeavour. A sense of vulnerability has arisen as the world got more closely connected and digitised. Data breaches, privacy incidents, cyber attacks and fake news are challenging trust in democratic processes, governments and corporations. Faith in governments to manage this challenge and set global norms is eroding. Industry is expected to lead on change instead of waiting for governments to impose it.

With the impact of AI and other data-driven technology comes big responsibility. Magna Carta wants to contribute to transparency, accountability and customer-centricity in the conduct of companies and organisations so as to deliver on the promises of emerging technology.
